Open Salon Rules

  1. Contestants of the Salon OPEN Category can be any couple combination of gender, level, amateur or professional who are over the age of 18 years at the commencement of the Championship and legally in the United States.
  2. Any contradiction in the data supplied shall result in a disqualification or a penalty by the Judging Panel or The Producer.
  1. Competitors must provide as part of their Official Entry a photocopy of valid documentation that certifies their legal presence in the USA at the time of the Championship
  2. Official signed Entry Form of each of the participants shall signify their knowledge of, and agreement to the event & relevant category rules.
  3. All contestants must be registered and ready before each of the Championship events begins. You will be given locations, times and dates after registration.
  4. Official Open Salon first place couple shall be awarded a trophy, medal and a $500 cash prize in the form of a check and second and third place winners will be awarded medals and fourth, fifth and sixth will receive ribbons. All competitors & semi-finalists will be awarded a certificate of participation or achievement.
  5. The Judging Panel, composed of at least three judges or any odd number, one of whom will be the Head Judge, shall be appointed by the Producer.
  6. All decisions by the Judging Panel are final and cannot be appealed. It is implicit and binding participants have agreed to this condition when signing the official entry form.
  7. Contestants will dance as many qualifying rounds (3 tangos per round) as decided by the judging panel based on the number of contestants,
  8. The judging panel will then select the semi-finalists who will dance as many rounds (3 tangos) as decided by the judging panel to determine the finalists & the winners. See entry confirmation or Championship schedule for semi-final and final dates and times. (Usually the following night). Subject to change.
  9. Scores of each presentation are drawn from the sum of points allocated by each Judge on a 1 to 10 point scale according to the 6 points below.
  1. The Judging Panel is judging 6 different areas:
    a) musicality
    b) circulation around the floor - Couples shall constantly move counterclockwise in the line of dance and shall avoid remaining in the same place or traveling against the line of dance in a clockwise direction in order to avoid interrupting the dance circulation.
    c) walking style
    d) consistency of the close embrace - The close embrace definition:  the leaders right forearm and hand are in contact with the followers ribcage and back. The followers left arm and hand are in contact with the leaders right arm and ribcage or shoulder. The followers’ right hand or fingers and the leaders left hand are in contact. The front of the leaders and followers bodies are close or in contact. The close embrace consistency is: once formed the spacing between the partners’ bodies must be consistent for the duration of the song. The embrace can adjust subtly to accommodate the movements by flexing or extending the elbows, and the leaders right arm and hand can slide no more than half the width of the followers back without losing contact. The followers may not move their hand or arm positions.
    e) harmony & connection between the couple
    f) dress & presentation (men are expected to wear a jacket and tie)
  2. Both dancers must keep their feet in contact with the floor except for taps or boleos. In the case of a boleo no dancer may raise his/her foot above the knee line.
  3. The couples score will be penalized for the use of Ganchos, leaps, trepadas (lifts) and any other typical tango stage choreographic moves.
  4. Dancers may perform any other figures commonly used, including barridas, sacadas, volcadas, colcada & enrosques as long as the distance between partners does not change, the embrace is not broken and the feet are not lifted from the floor.
  5. The Judging Panel or the Producer shall be entitled to disqualify participants from the competition for any noncompliance with rules, loss of ethics or any improper act that causes physical harm or may tarnish the Judging Panel’s, Sponsors, The Producers or Championship image. Any disqualified Participant forfeits their entry fee and any prizes and titles.
  6. Only theJudges and the coordinator shall have access to the judging marks until placements have been arrived at and results have been announced. Thereafter only the Final total score for each couple for that category event will be available to the contestants.
  7. There is to be no communication between the contestants and the judges during the competition. Any questions by contestants for the judges regarding their scores must be addressed only to the Head Judge and only after the finalists or winners have been announced AND within 30 minutes of the end of the Championship Event. Any subsequent inquiry or challenge concerning the placements must be addressed in writing only directly to the head judge or the Producer.
  8. Competitors shall conduct themselves in a Civil and sportsmanlike manner, competitors shall not harass or challenge any judge about their markings, during or after that event.  The final decision of any challenge is in the hands of the Head Judge.
  9. Any derogatory, defamatory, liable or inflammatory statements in writing or verbally by any competitor at any time regarding the organizer, organization, a judge, judging or Sponsor of the Championship will be addressed in a legal manner. Any awarded titles, prizes can be withdrawn and future entries of said competitors declined at the discretion of The Producer or the Judging panel.
Amateur Salon Rules back to top
  1. Contestants of the Salon AMATEUR Category can be any couple combination of gender & level who are over the age of 18 years at the commencement of the Championship and legally in the United States and meets the definition of an amateur. Amateur Definition: (Nonprofessional) One who engages in a pursuit, study, science or sport as a past-time rather than as a profession. An amateur may be a performer, an instructor, or a professional’s assistant who does not receive any cash payment or exchange. An instructor is an individual who provides dance education.
    Professional Definition: is an individual who has declared him or herself a professional in writing, and or verbally or one who has performed or instructed for a fee. One who uses his or her Tango dance skills in order to receive monetary gain as a full or part time occupation
  2. Any contradiction in the data supplied shall result in a disqualification or a penalty by the Judging Panel or The Producer i.e. if any evidence or indication of professional status of either partner of the couple arises and proven to the Producers’ satisfaction their entry will automatically be transferred to the Open category. If they are already entered in the Open category they have a choice to transfer to the stage category or lose their entry.
  3. Competitors must provide as part of their Official Entry a photocopy of valid documentation that certifies their legal presence in the USA at the time of the Championship
  4. Official signed Entry Form of each of the participants shall signify their knowledge of, and agreement to the event & relevant category rules.
  5. All contestants must be registered and ready before each of the Championship events begins. You will be given locations, times and dates after registration.
  6. A minimum of 5 couples is necessary for an Official Salon AMATEUR Category. If less than 5 couples enter the AMATEUR Category will be at the discretion of the Producer
  7. Official Salon Amateur first place couple shall be awarded a trophy, medal and the option to enter the Open Salon Category for Free. Second and third place winners will be awarded medals and fourth, fifth and sixth will receive ribbons. All competitors & semi-finalists will be awarded a certificate of participation or achievement.
  8. The Judging Panel, composed of at least three judges or any odd number, one of whom will be the Head Judge, shall be appointed by the Producer.

Stage Rules   back to top
  1. Contestants of the Stage Category can be any couple combination of gender & level, amateur or professional, over the age of 18 years at the commencement of the Championship and legally in the United States.
  2. Any contradiction in the data supplied will result in disqualification or penalty.
  3. Competitors must provide as part of their Official Entry a photocopy of valid identity that certifies their legal presence in the USA at the time of the Championship.
  4. Official signed Entry Form of each of the participants shall signify their knowledge of, and agreement to the event & relevant category rules.
  5. All contestants must be registered and ready before each of the Championship events begins. You will be given locations, times and dates after registration.
  6. An Official Stage category consists of a minimum of 12 couples in which the Winning couple will receive a cash prize. If there are 11 or less couples entered then any cash prize will be at the discretion of the Producer.
  7. An Official Stage category first place couple shall be awarded a trophy, medal and a cash prize and second and third place winners will be awarded medals and fourth, fifth and sixth will receive ribbons. All competitors & semi-finalists will be awarded a certificate of participation or achievement.
  8. The Judging Panel is composed of at least three judges or any odd number, one who will be the Head Judge.
  9. All decisions by the Judging Panel are final and cannot be appealed. It is implicit that participants have agreed to this condition when signing the official entry form.
  10. Couples in this category perform one at a time to one tango or piece of their selected music.
  11. The judging panel will then select the semi-finalists who will each perform one tango to their selected music to determine the finalists & the winners. See entry confirmation or Championship schedule for semi-final and final dates and times. (Usually the following night). Subject to change
  12. Scores of each presentation are drawn from the sum of points allocated by each Judge on a 1- to- 10 point scale according to the 4 criteria points below.
  13. Judges shall take into account the following 4 criteria:
    a) Choreographic effects, posture, techniques, composition (creation or recreation), Use of the stage space, Body and space alignment.
    b) Couple synchronicity & Musical accuracy (relaxation, music-dancer-style).
    c) Interpretation, Preservation of Argentine Tango essence.
    d) Costumes and make-up
  14. Music: Contestants must provide their music CD & written queuing instructions with their entry AND at each event that they are competing in. (absolutely NO FLASH DRIVES, IPODS or IPHONES).
  15. Dancers may not use tango music to perform other dancing techniques or choreographies. i.e. dance a completely different style of dance Flamenco or Ballet to Argentine Tango music.
  16. Dancers may break the embrace and use other techniques from other dance disciplines, as long as this contribution be part of but not all of the choreography. They may perform one or different choreographies.
  17. The Judging Panel shall be entitled to disqualify participants from the competition for any noncompliance with rules, loss of ethics or improper act that may tarnish the Judging Panel’s, Sponsors, The Producers or Championship image. Any disqualified Participant forfeits their entry fee and any prizes and titles.
  18. Only the Judges and coordinator shall have access to the judging marks until placements have been arrived at and results have been announced. Thereafter only the final total Score for each couple for that category event will be available to the contestants.

Event Rules    back to top
  1. The USA Tango Championship shall include the following categories: Open Tango Salon, Amateur Tango Salon and Open Stage Tango for Couples from amateurs to professionals.
  2. Each category shall comprise of two to three stages. Qualifying Round, Semi-finals and Finals.
  3. Celebrate Tango hereafter called The Producer shall ensure the compliance with all provisions set forth herein.
  4. The Producer shall not be responsible for delays or contingencies arising out of any reason whatsoever, at the moment of presentation of competitors in the different rounds.
  5. The Producer reserves the right to record all Championship instances, by any means customary or new, including but not limited to, filming, audio recording, photographing, digitalization, on its own or through third parties authorized to this effect. Records so obtained shall be the exclusive property of The Producer. The signed Championship entry form shall signify the express and irrevocable authorization by participants to use said records, without purporting any related payment for any reason by The Producer, in favor of any person or organization that claims for the alleged rights. This clause also includes, but is not limited to, the photographic material to be published and/or used for promotion, advertising or other purposes to be determined.
  6. All Championship contestants agree to participate in the promotional acts and events planned by The Producer, such as press conferences, articles, reports, interviews either on the radio or air or cable TV, etc., as long as they are advised to that end.
  7. The Producer shall be entitled to change the order of performances of participants and the modality thereof, as well as to specify the number of rounds in which each couple shall take part.
  8. Entries are open in all categories until either the designated closure date or the category capacity is reached.
  9. Any competitor who meets the specific Category rules requirements may enter in any or all three of the categories with the same or a different partner.
  10. Contestant entry in any category is valid when The Producer receives and accepts all of the following:  a completed and signed entry form, legible document copies verifying each contestants legal status in the USA, music CD if Stage Category and the entry fee.
  11. The Judging Panel shall not discriminate against any competitor on the basis of race, religion, color, age, gender, sexual orientation or national origin.
  12. A member of the Judging Panel must not adjudicate events where a competitor is a relative. A relative is defined as, a spouse, domestic partner, household member or family member.
  13.  Judges shall mark all competitors solely on their performance in the dance that is being adjudicated at the time. No consideration of titles, reputation, previous performances in other events, preceding rounds or preceding dances are admissible.
  14. The Head Judge is responsible for the proper implementation of the scoring system, and may replace or excuse any judge from officiating if he or she feels that a Judges sound judging may be impaired.  In all matters relating to the conduct of the competition and questions on judges markings, the Head Judge’s decision shall be final. The Head Judge is responsible for the correct interpretation of the marks and verification that they have been correctly transcribed. 
  15. The winning couples of each category agree to be available to perform exclusively at the events requested by The Producer and/or at the USA Tango Championship & NYC Summer Tango & Film Festival. That any other performance other than for The Producer subsequent to the winning occur no sooner than 21 days after the last day of the Festival without the agreement of The Producer. That the winning couple be reasonably available throughout the year for promotion of the next USA Tango Championship and will perform at the Qualifying or Finals night of the same. That all bio or appearance references to their Championship status include acknowledgment of The Producer, USA Tango Championship and any named Championship sponsors.
  16. Submission of the signed Official Entry Form of each participant shall signify their knowledge of and agreement to these event and the relevant category rules and requirements.
